School project - Bachelor 3rd year
Game Designer, Art director, 2D Artist and UI Artist
The project had the following constraints : mobile game, PEGI 7 and Devolver as an editor. We had to find an idea that would fit Devolver's style and humor, but also the ambiance and gameplay of their usual titles. Therefore, we worked on a fun simple gameplay. The player is a mimic who is trying to graduate from school. In the village of Vilsournois, he can discuss with the inhabitants to learn more about them and the game's lore while at school he has to train with his friends in the dungeon.
In collaboration with Louise HUTEAU, we established the global art direction of the game as well as its graphic bible. This was a long process with a lot of different tests and decisions regarding stylization, line art, color palettes etc. We were inspired by the work of Tim Burton, as well as games such as Have a Nice Death and Death's Door. We then made sure that all guidelines were followed and didn't hesitate to help and provide input to our art team.
World building was a big part of this project. Even though it was only a prototype, I wanted the game to be interesting and coherent. The village being the part that was supporting our narration, I focused my efforts there, writing dialogs for our NPCs and creating scenes that would put light on our story.
When it comes to production, I was in charge of all 2D environment assets and props for the village, as well as the general user interface for the game, going from concepts to production. I also helped my friends with a couple of VFX and animations, as well as the trailer. I also helped with the level design for the village so as to help our developers with integration.
